# What is Motif?

> Motif is a local-first music workspace for producers to organize, listen to, share, and publish their work.

# What is Motif?

Motif is a Windows desktop workspace for the music that exists **outside your DAW**: exported beats, loops, songs, alternate versions, collaborator material, packs you intend to send, and eligible publishing work.

It is not a replacement for your DAW and it does not ask you to rebuild your music collection inside a cloud service. You choose the folders Motif watches. The source audio stays in those folders while Motif builds a more useful way to browse, hear, compare, group, send, and publish it.

## The basic model

Motif has four connected parts:

1. **Library** turns your local exports into a browsable music workspace.
2. **Listening** keeps playback, waveform navigation, versions, details, and visualizers close to that Library.
3. **Tracked** follows selected external channels, chats, and cloud folders without pretending that remote material is already local.
4. **Studio** helps you plan destinations, deliver packs, and prepare supported content workflows.

The same piece of music can move through these parts without losing its context. You might find an export in All, add it to a Custom shortlist, compare its versions, place it in an Opportunity pack, then include it in a Send Out.

> Keep playback running while you browse, seek through a waveform, inspect musical details, compare versions blindly, or open an audio-reactive visualizer.

## Library is not one long folder list

Motif gives the same local music several useful perspectives:

* **All** is the complete local collection from watched folders.
* **Types** groups music as beats, loops, or songs.
* **Collab** brings work associated with a creator or collaborator together.
* **Custom** contains collections whose purpose and membership you decide.
* **Tracked** is deliberately separate because it represents selected external sources rather than your watched local files.

These views are not competing copies of the audio. They are different ways of finding and using the same underlying work.

## Listening stays attached to the work

The Now Playing bar remains available while you move through Motif. It carries the current listening order, play state, seek position, shuffle, repeat, volume, and version controls.

Expand it when you want a larger waveform, audio-reactive visualizer, or track details such as BPM, key, format, type, and available creator information. Collapse it when you want to keep listening while organizing or preparing a send.

## Tracked is intentionally different from local music

Connecting Discord, Telegram, Google Drive, Dropbox, or YouTube does not import an entire account. You choose a specific source to follow. Motif can then show supported audio from that source, report new material, and refresh it when requested.

Remote audio remains remote until you deliberately download an individual file. This distinction helps you understand what is part of your own local Library and what still depends on an external service.

## Studio separates intent

The three Studio areas answer different questions:

| Area | Question it answers |
| - | - |
| **Opportunities** | Who or what could this music be right for? |
| **Send Outs** | What am I sending now, through which destinations, and what was sent before? |
| **Content** | How do I prepare eligible music for a supported public publishing workflow? |

Keeping them separate prevents a possible destination, a private delivery, and a public post from becoming one ambiguous action.

## Local-first, with optional connections

Motif uses your selected local folders to organize and play your music. It does not need to upload the contents of those folders simply to build the Library.

Online communication occurs when a feature requires it: signing into your Motif account, checking access or updates, connecting an optional service, refreshing a Tracked source, sending a pack, or publishing through a service you selected.

See [Local and connected activity](https://docs.getmotif.page/privacy/local-and-connected.md) for the practical boundary.

## Choose your creative role

During first launch, choose **Artist**, **Producer**, or **Both**. This influences music types and which Studio workflows are relevant. You can change Artist and Producer capabilities later in Settings without rebuilding your Library.

## Start here

**1. Complete first launch**

Sign in, choose your role, and open the folder that contains your exported music.

**2. Understand the Library views**

Open All, Types, Collab, and Custom to see the same collection from different angles.

**3. Play and inspect a track**

Use the Now Playing bar, then expand it for the waveform, visualizer, and available details.

**4. Add connections only when needed**

Connect a service when you are ready to follow a source, send music, or publish through that service.

## Official context for you and your AI

These are Motif's official product docs. Read them directly, copy any page as Markdown, or open a page in ChatGPT or Claude. When using another AI, choose **Copy page** and paste the official context into the assistant you trust.

Ask the assistant to answer from the official Motif documentation and not invent unsupported features. Narrow pages such as Versions, Tracked sources, Opportunities, and Send Outs provide enough context for precise product questions without requiring the assistant to interpret the marketing website.
